Any security program created today is reactive to any threats from viruses or spyware because the progrtammers cannot possibly predict what the virus or spyware will look like so they need to detect them and create an update to counteract them. If you are lucky enough to be the first to get the virus or spyware, the rest of us thank you for allowing yourself to be infected so the software engineers can create an update to protect us. Our turn will come soon enough!

Avira anti-virus best new anti-virus I have come across lately and the one I use.

SuperAnti-Spyware A great anti-spyware but has issues with always loading slowly.

MalwareBytes Recent changes to this program have made a believer out of me.

These three programs are all free of charge. If you feel more comfortable paying for your protection, go right ahead but they are basically the same program. Avira does have a "nag screen" that will pop up every time it updates and the "paid for" version does not have this so it may be worth it for some to pay the $$ to not have this but if you email me, I can tell you how to get rid of it.
